Magnetization switching without charge or spin currents

چکیده
We propose schemes of reversing the magnetization of a ferromagnet by electric fields alone, without charge or spin currents or external magnetic fields. The switching is triggered by picosecond manipulation of the atomic positions or subpicosecond distortion of the valence charge distribution, which through spin-orbit coupling modifies the magnetic anisotropy. We discuss how such time-even anisotropies can be used to switch the time-odd magnetization for in-plane and out-of-plane magnetization directions. In all cases the switching process is completely determined by the appropriately chosen orientation, magnitude, and temporal length of the electric field created by a voltage or photon pulse. © 2009 American Institute of Physics. Current-induced switching in a magnetic insulator.
The spin Hall effect in heavy metals converts charge current into pure spin current, which can be injected into an adjacent ferromagnet to exert a torque. This spin-orbit torque (SOT) has been widely used to manipulate the magnetization in metallic ferromagnets. In the case of magnetic insulators (MIs), although charge currents cannot flow, spin currents can propagate, but current-induced contr...

New spintronics devices for GreenIT In our information-everywhere society IT is a major player for energy consumption and novel spintronic devices can play a role in the quest for GreenIT. Reducing power consumption of mobile devices by replacing volatile memory by fast non-volatile spintronic memory could also improve speed and a onememory-fits-all approach drastically simplifies the microelec...

The field of spintronics involves the study of both spin and charge transport in solid-state devices. Ultrafast magnetism involves the use of femtosecond laser pulses to manipulate magnetic order on subpicosecond time scales. We unite these phenomena by using picosecond charge current pulses to rapidly excite conduction electrons in magnetic metals. We observe deterministic, repeatable ultrafas...
متن کاملTime-resolved imaging of spin transfer switching: beyond the macrospin concept.
Time-resolved images of the magnetization switching process in a spin transfer structure, obtained by ultrafast x-ray microscopy, reveal the limitations of the macrospin model. Instead of a coherent magnetization reversal, we observe switching by lateral motion of a magnetic vortex across a nanoscale element. Our measurements reveal the fundamental roles played independently by the torques due ...
متن کاملMagnetization switching in ferromagnets by adsorbed chiral molecules without current or external magnetic field
Ferromagnets are commonly magnetized by either external magnetic fields or spin polarized currents. The manipulation of magnetization by spin-current occurs through the spin-transfer-torque effect, which is applied, for example, in modern magnetoresistive random access memory. However, the current density required for the spin-transfer torque is of the order of 1 × 106 A·cm-2, or about 1 × 1025...
